July 10th, 2008
Gum disease has become a serious threat to many people around the world, and being aware of what you can do to avoid it is essential in proper gum disease prevention. Choosing the right food is vital for effective gum disease prevention. Although a healthy diet keeps gum disease away, there are several precautions people should understand regarding sugars and starchy food intake. Such highly refined sweets such as soft drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, pies, syrups, jam, jellies and pastries should be limited, especially in between meals. For those who have sweet tooth, it is best to choose natural and fresh fruits that contain natural sugars. People should also watch over their consumption of starchy foods. Snack foods can be raw vegetables, such as carrots or celery, apples, cheese, peanuts, or other items that are not likely to introduce refined carbohydrates into the mouth between meals. Tooth decay is promoted when sugars and refined carbohydrates are eaten in excessive amounts. Practicing proper oral hygiene, especially brushing after every meal can help prevent tooth decay and possible gum disease.
