Most people are unaware that periodontal disease and gum disease are the same condition. Whatever name you may call it, both conditions are serious dental threats that can lead to medical problems in the future. Gum disease may be more of a basic or common way of talking about periodontal issues but they both refer to problems caused by anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity. Gum disease is not a permanent condition, and treating the problem in earliest and mildest stage is a fairly simple matter and can generally be accomplished with good oral hygiene and a teeth cleaning.
