trying to buy a half stack, for guitar, metal sound?
ive been playing guitar for around 3 to 4 years, but sadly i don’t know much about half stack amps and other stuff like it, im looking in to buying a nice half stack, because i blew the speaker out of my 15 watt amp, is there anyone out there that can give me some good info on amps and such, im looking for a nice metal sound, with good sustain, and i heard marshal amps are really nice, should i look for a tube amp? or a regular one? what are the main differences between tube amps, and other ones? are tube amps worth the money? and info would be appreciated. if you need any more info just ask
I’m going to keep my answer as brief as possible.
Marshall is a great brand, both their solid state and tube amps are very High Quality. Play before you buy, as always, but Marshall is a known quantity – you know you’ll get a good solid tone from it vs some unknown brand.
Tube amps vs solid state vs digital. Tube amps were first – they amplify using vacuum tubes. Tubes use a lot of energy, but they sound great when you push them – they distort a lot, but most of that distortion is even-order harmonics, ie, it sounds really good, and it sounds nice and loud. Pleasing, in a word. Solid state amps came later – they use transistors. Transistors sound good until they get pushed too hard – then they sound like crap. But they’re more efficient with power! Digital modelling amps are amps that can use either tubes or solid state amplification, but they get their tone from digital chips (ie programming, algorithms, etc).
Line 6 = digital, for instance. I can’t stand Line 6. The Marshall MG series is solid state, it uses certain types of transistors. It sounds good, though, Marshall knows what they’re doing. It won’t sound as good as a Marshall JCM900, but that’s because Marshall knows what they’re doing – and nothing really sounds as good as a well-designed tube amp!
In my opinion tube amps are worth the money if you can afford it, absolutely. The quality of the tone is much higher. That said, don’t get a huge amp. The more watts the amp has the louder you’ll have to turn it up for it to sound really good… ie, get that “cranked” sound!
So to compare, I have to turn my Mesa Boogie 100w Tremoverb head up a fair bit before it really starts to sing…. say, about as loud as the drummer before it *really* starts to get good.
By comparison, my 5 watt Epiphone Valve Jr sounds great and cranked at half that volume…. and I’ve been preferring that sound over the mega-loud chunk of the Boogie. It’s kinda crazy….
The best advice I can give you is that you want the best speakers you can buy. It’s just as important as the amp itself! Metal tone really relies on hot pickups, a high gain amp, and good quality speakers – you want a good solid low end chunk, and enough high end to be crisp but not shrieky. It’s not an easy task to do well, and many cabs just can’t pull it off convincingly.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match to get the tone you want – honestly, that’s half of the fun of getting a separate head and cab!
Beyond this, I’d suggest taking your guitar to Guitar Center and start plugging in to some amps…. and don’t be afraid to turn them up a little bit, an amp just isn’t the same at low volumes as it is at at least medium volume!
